Enemy Weakness
If a player attempts to search for a weakness in a creature or object, have them make an ability check of your choice with any of the following DC:
- DC 8 + Creature/Object Challenge Rating (CR) + Creature/Object Proficiency Bonus
- DC 10 + Player Character Level
If successful, you can reveal a weakness on or in the creature/object that the player character was searching for. You can decide what kind of weakness is revealed that is appropriate for the situation.
Some suggestions for weaknesses are below:
Lowered Defense. If the weakness is revealed and visible, then the area of the creature where the weakness is located will have a lower AC than its normal AC when attacked. For instance, if the creature normally has an AC of 18, but its weakness is specifically targeted during an attack, then its AC could be reduced to 15 for that particular attack.
Extra Damage. Optionally, if a weakness is successfully hit, after damage is dealt to the object/creature, it takes additional damage equal to half the damage dealt.
This is a great way to reward players for taking the time to plan ahead or to turn a dire situation into a fighting chance.
